Isolated gene can be transferred (transgenosis) into a suitable recipient cell by electroporation, microprojectile method or by using a suitable vector.
Transfer of certain genes by a viral vector from the previous host into the new-one is called transduction, and is beneficial to the bacterium only if viral infection is lysogenic and not lytic. Transduction can benefit both male and female bacteria.
