Important Points

Credit of having discovered bound cells is given to Robert Hooke who observed them in a thin slice of cork Qurcus suber and reported his observations in a book - Micrographia authored by him. He also coined the term cell.
Free cells, including the bacteria, protozoa and spermatozoa were discovered by Anton Von Leuwenhoek. Robert Brown discovered nucleus.
Purkinje coined the term protoplasm to describe the contents of cells (in animal embryos). The term was applied to the cellular contents in plant embryos by Von Mohl. Huxley described protoplasm as the material basis of life. The terms cytoplasm and nucleoplasm were introduced by Strasburger.
Schleiden and Schwann put forth a biological generalization called Cell theory that originally had only two points or tenets namely, (i) all organisms were made of cells, and (ii) cell was the basic unit of structure and function in all life. Cell theory was extended by Rudolph Virchow who added a third tenet into the theory by stating that cells arise only from the pre-existing cells (omnis cellula e cellula) Viruses are the exception to cell theory.
Middle lamella is the intercellular cement in typical plant tissues. Chemically, it is calcium/magnesium pectate. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the middle lamella.
