Podocytes are epithelial cells of Bowman's capsule that wrap around glomerulus. Each podocyte has many projections called pedicels.(Imagine like villi in intestine). These pedicels when in contact with glomerular capillaries, leave small spaces between them. These so formed pores or fenestra are the way in for filtered molecules like water, glucose, ionic salts. The pores are small enough not to allow large molecules like proteins to pass through them. As podocytes contract the pores become smaller - less filtrate is passed into nephron. Hence, podocytes regulate GFR by their pore sizing. Also, if for some reason podocytes are destroyed protein molecules can pass into urine (proteinuria).
