How to take breaks between exam preparation

Let’s get straight to the point where you are doing intense study for your exams. It’s the time when you have shunned the world, oiled your hair and piled up all the books on your study table.

I want to drive home a point that studying without a break is foolishness. This break does not mean the washroom breaks you take or lunch and dinner breaks you take. A study break after a stretch of study is a must because it relaxes your mind and helps you retain what you have learnt better.

Best Studying Pattern

It means you start your day early and not when the whole world is up and on their jobs and chaos of the day is on the rise.

  • Early morning studies are most beneficial.
  • Have breakfast it provides the mandatory nutrition even to the brain which is working extra these days.
  • After every 40-60 minutes of study, plan a 10 minute break.
  • Lunch and dinner breaks can be longer but take care of your meals for lunch and dinner as well.
  • Plan a nap during the day for a duration of 20-30 minutes and one to two long breaks of 30 minutes during the day.
  • Make sure you put in at least 6-8 hours of night sleep. If you nap during the day 5-6 hours of sleep works.

Meal Breaks

Meals breaks can be a little long between 30-60 minutes. Here are some tips to make meal breaks rewarding.

  • Avoid very sugary, very oily and very spicy foods and eat light only to satisfy 85% of your hunger. Rest fill it up with water
  • Take a stroll inside or outside your house. You can do this while going through your notes as well. It will help you digest your food, get you some fresh air and let you revise what you just studied

Long Breaks

  • The long breaks should not be more than 2 in a day and should last between 20 and 30 minutes.
  • Make sure you put in some physical exercise during this break. The exercise should be light like jogging or stretching etc.
  • Do some deep breathing exercises or meditation so rejuvenate your brain.
  • You can use one of the breaks to take a nap

Short Breaks

10 minute long break after every 40-60 minutes of study is a must and here is how to spend it

  • Make sure you drink some water and eat some fruits to keep you hydrated and your energy levels up.
  • Get up your seat and take at least 20 steps, bat your eyelids 20 times and rub your hands and place on your eyes.
  • You can also do some stretching exercises.
  • Do not extend 10 minutes; longer break often is not beneficial.
  • Call up a good friend (who will not stress you out) and chat for a while or spend time with your family.

What not to do in breaks?

  • No TV or video games
  • No Internet surfing
  • No heavy exercises and even fatty or spicy foods
  • Avoid too much tea or coffee and no smoking

Finally, remember you are taking breaks between studies not studying in break times so break for only the planned time!
