![]() | Posted on : 12:43:13 PM on February 01, 2010 First of all you need to know about hydrocarbons,then you will know about Alkanes. 1) Hydrocarbons are compounds whose molecules contain carbon and hydrogen atoms only.The hydrocarbons are divide into Cyclic Hydrocarbons and Acyclic Hydrocarbons. 2) Alkanes come under the category of Acyclic Hydrocarbons. 3) Alkanes are the saturated hydrocarbons( i.e., they have only single bonds ) 4) The general formula of alkanes is Cn H(2n + 2) where n=1,2,3,........ 5) They are also known as Paraffins as they have less tendecy to react with other compounds ( because of more stability) 6) some of the examples are Methane ( CH4 ) ; Ethane ( C2H6 ) ; Propane ( C3H8 ) etc.... |

There a many many different alkanes, however, the general formula for an alkane is always this: where "n" is an integer greater than or equal to 1. |
