Are you referring to thermit or thermite Reactions. Thermite Reaction is essentially a technique where a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide produces a aluminothermic reaction.

This technique is used to create short bursts and is usually used at times and places where one needs to expose a small surface area to very high temperatures. For instance, this can be used in railway lines for welding purposes.
