When an object moves through liquid or even air, there will be friction due to resistance. This resistance increases with the velocity of the body as in the case of a rocket and aeroplane. Therefore the direction is always opposite. It is more like the other way round I think. Since the ball moves fast has very high speed and therefore it cuts across. if speed of the air is high the ball will flow along with it. Hence to minimize this friction due to the resistance of the medium, the bodies of aeroplanes, missiles etc. are streamlined.
